Goals and accountability

A new calendar year brings with it by definition a sense of a new beginning. We are coming off of a particularly challenging year with a lot of uncertainty.

With that, some may be inclined to seek some sense of control and therefore opportunities that can bring goals that they have been thinking about for months (or years) into the light.  This year has had the profound ability to show us what really matters.

Some individuals view resolutions as a way to fix things they perceive have gone wrong (health, money, relationships..) while others see it as an opportunity to learn something new, to expand on a previous behaviour/skill or simply change their mindset on a particular concept.

My Personal resolution/goal in 2014 was to embody the mantra “If you don’t ask, you don’t get”. I used to be afraid to ask for things for a fear of having my ego bruised or worse, GASP, getting a no. Humans don’t like no. What I learned was, if you are kind and genuine, people rarely say no. It’s a resolution that has served me well.

The most common goals are related to:

  • Health (diet, exercise and or quitting smoking)

  • Money (make more, save more, invest more)

  • Fulfillment related (love, spiritual, family, getting your head or space organized, work/learn on a new project/idea)

  • Professional (ask for that raise, get that promotion, quit that job, land that dream job)

According to Canadian statistics only 1 in 3 make resolutions and 73% of them will break them.

How can you go about setting realistic goals that keep the momentum to see you through on your plans?

Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Look at the actual activity you are engaging in and not the final goal- Be proud and celebrate every accomplishment on your path. Little wins lead to big victories.

  • Eliminate attachment to the outcome. Negativity, fear and lack of motivation will happen. Tomorrow is an opportunity to get back on track. One day at a time.

  • Keep the control in YOUR court. Don’t expect others to jump on and stay on YOUR bandwagon.

  • Make sure you actually want this. People will not make sustainable change unless it comes from within & is truly meaningful to them.

You can increase your chances of success by joining a group of individuals that are working towards the same goal as you. There is a reason why programs like weight watchers and spin classes are so effective. The group keeps you accountable to your end game.
